The Big House Theatre Company
The Big House has a simple mission: to enable care leavers and marginalised young people to fulfil their potential.
In theory, every young person should have the same opportunities in life. Sadly for many young adults leaving the care system, this is not the case. The statistics are stark and speak for themselves. A shocking 46% of care leavers remain continuously NEET (not in education, employment or training); 20% experience homelessness within two years; and care leavers are four times more likely to commit suicide than their peers.
Through an innovative wraparound model of life and employment skills development, drama techniques, mentoring, counselling and long term support, The Big House helps vulnerable young people overcome emotional barriers, access the opportunities available to their peers and lead independent, fulfilling lives.
In 2017, the Berkeley Foundation supported The Big House to reach more than 90 young people through weekly drama workshops over the course of nine months. 14 of these then took part in an intensive 12 week theatre programme, which culminated with a four week run of their production, Phoenix Rising.
