The team at Berkeley Capital has been working with Community Partner AFK charity since 2022. AFK supports children and young people with disabilities and autism. From mobility equipment to employment skills, AFK is committed to creating opportunities for those who are often left behind.
In the UK, the disability employment gap is 28%. Only 54% of people with disabilities are in employment, compared with 82% of those without a disability. AFK is just one of our charity partners that we are working alongside to increase the opportunities for people with disabilities and neurodivergence.
During the partnership, Berkeley Capital colleagues have raised over £158,000 through fundraising events, payroll giving and match funding from the Foundation – a hugely impressive amount. The money has made a monumental difference in the lives of the individuals and families supported by AFK; from funding specialised mobility equipment to empowering young people with bespoke employment skills programs.
But the partnership spans much more than fundraising. Berkeley volunteers have hosted visits and careers talks for the young people at AFK, introducing them to the many different roles in construction. At National Careers Week this year, Berkeley’s TwelveTrees Park project opened its doors to a group of young people from AFK’s Preparing For Work schools programme.
The young people got an exclusive tour of the site, learning about various roles in the industry first hand. From exploring construction sites to engaging with Berkeley employees, the experience left a mark on the young people’s journey towards independence and employment.
A representative from AFK also attended the Berkeley Foundation Awards in March, where they received a highly commended accolade for the incredible partnership with Berkeley Capital.
Two colleagues ran the London Marathon for AFK this year. Alex Carroll and Arran Smith raised a phenomenal £5,782 to support children and young people with disabilities and autism.
If you are keen to get involved, AFK are looking for support to deliver their ‘We Mean Business’ programme designed for 18 – 25 year olds to help them turn their skills and passions into self-employment. We are looking for colleagues to share their skills in business planning, marketing, advertising, financial planning and branding, as well as understanding tax and self-assessment. Please drop Charlotte Milmo, one of our wonderful Berkeley Capital Foundation Champions, a line to find out more.
It’s an incredible partnership, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the future holds!
