Berkeley development Oval Village played host to a unique cricketing spectacle this month as teams from the Lord’s Taverners, Surrey Cricket Club and Berkeley St Edward went head to head inside the Grade II Listed gasholder.
Cricketing legend Mike Gatting, and winner with the England Learning Disability team, Jonny Gale, took to the improvised crease to help celebrate the Berkeley Foundation’s new £750,000 commitment to the ground-breaking Super 1s disability cricket programme.
This award-winning community cricket programme provides disabled young people the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits of playing sport, and is delivered by the Lord’s Taverners in partnership with county cricket boards across the country. The Foundation has supported Super 1s since 2013, and this new commitment will take the partnership through to 2026.
With film crews from Sky Sports and BBC London looking on, the slightly bizarre cricket match took place within the frame of the world-famous Oval gas holder, which has formed the backdrop to over 3,000 cricket games at the Kia Oval Cricket Ground for the past 145 years.
